Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder. This can be difficulty getting to sleep (type 1 insomnia)  or waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to get back to sleep (type 2 insomnia).  I think it’s fair to say we have all probably had some bouts of insomnia at some point in our life.  However, when this happens on a regular basis, it can cause disruption to our lives as we are unable to function at our best. A good night’s sleep is essential for the body and the mind. Did you know that between 10-30% of adults suffer from chronic insomnia and women have a lifetime risk of insomnia of up to 40% higher than men (www.sleepfoundation.org) and much more common in older people!

Worry and stress is the most common trigger for sleepless nights. Other culprits can be illness, the side effects of medication, noise and the environment. Too much caffeine, alcohol consumption the menopause, working different shift pattern to name a few. What often happens then is the worry of not getting to sleep causes anxiety which then perpetuates the problem causing a vicious circle.  The good news insomnia can be helped by using hypnotherapy. By addressing the underlying issues and behaviours that drive insomnia you are only literally a phone call away from getting a good night’s sleep.
